Special insights from German Shepherds

August 13, 2013

Today we have a special treat – Sarang, one of Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim‘s German Shepherds, has graciously agreed to do a guest post for us.  Let’s give her a big hand, and read what she has to say!

Hello  everyone!  I am so glad to meet you all!  I am a very happy and outgoing dog, and I love to meet new people.   But that being said, I am Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim‘s personal protection dog, alongside with my buddy Chung Song, and together we make sure that she is safe, at all times.

When we are in the living room, we each take our position on each side of Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim.

Sometimes we get rewarded, Korean style.  I have really come to like seaweed!

When we are not busy protecting our Master, we love to play!  Our Master always says, “work hard, play hard!” and that is what we do!  Our favorite game is to play fetch!  It is actually a great game that requires speed, quick reaction, change direction in mid run, sometimes mid-air and incredible coordination.  Just like Martial Arts, and it keeps us in perfect shape for our protection job!

Now during the hot California summer months, I really like playing in the water!

Here, I am imitating Chung Song, the perfect gentleman, drinking from the hose:

But this is how I prefer to handle it:

It is so much fun, and again, it is just like Martial Arts training!  You have to charge in, you have to be able to predict where the water will go, and as a special bonus, you get to drink a lot!

See how although we are K-9s, we are still warriors?  Oh and before you go, watch this – I am the star in this video!

Quail are God’s creatures too

Quail 3 copy

Where Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim lives, lots of wildlife enjoy a great environment.

Here you see Quincy and Queeny, the neighborhood quail, on their Sunday stroll.  Did you know that quail are very sociable birds and like to stay together in groups?  Except during mating season, when they break off into pairs, and raise their young.

One of the things they like to do is take dust baths together – burying their underbellies into dry, dusty soil and move around….see how well-developed they are?  They have been on this planet for about a Million Years, so they know what works and what doesn’t!

Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim‘s words come to mind, reminding me that every creature has its place, it’s purpose.

“Freedom does not mean being free from adversity or difficulty.  Freedom is the knowledge that you have the power to conquer adversity and difficulty.  If you could ask any animal living free in the animal kingdom they would tell you that they aren’t free from trouble.  Predators are everywhere, and life is a daily challenge.  But all animals were born with instincts to protect them, and were given special talents and abilities to help them stay alive and pursue their lives in freedom.”

Martial Arts – it’s where your heart and soul are!

Bruno-1 copy

Bruno the bull – calling his herd to have class!

Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim teaches that there are different categories of people:

Rock

Vegetable

Animal

Real human being

A rock only moves when it gets kicked, or gets moved by external forces.  It never does anything on its own.  There are people just like that!

Vegetables are great – however, they are good at one thing, and only do one thing, no matter what.  People are capable of much more!

Animals do many things, but lack the mental focus  Only real humans live up to their full potential.

That said, Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim does not look down on rocks, vegetables and animals.  Not at all.  They are doing what they were meant to do!  But human beings are destined for so much more!

So are these cows really lining up for class?  Are they capable of doing such things?

Is Bruno really showing them base form 1?

And are these cows just hanging out, or paying close attention to Bruno’s demonstration?

Who can tell?

One thing is for sure though – wherever you are, whatever your job is, you can always find a way to practice Martial Arts.  No special equipment is necessary to practice your basics.  You can practice your forms in pretty much any clothes.  Whether you are in the great outdoors like these cows, or in a cramped office space – you can practice what you have learned, so when the time comes, you can apply it instinctively!

Happy Blue Heron Celeste

Celeste - nice poses.MTS.Still006Maybe you remember our local Blue Heron, Celeste?  She loves to stay near Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim‘s place, and even though there really isn’t much water around except perhaps the watering station for the local cows, she keeps coming back.

Celeste always reminds me of Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim‘s words about freedom to be who you are born to be!

“You were born to be free!  Just as nature is full of wildlife that is born in freedom, you, too, are meant to live free.  You are a part of nature, too.  And there is no greater freedom than to be the master of your own destiny.  There is no greater happiness than to be who you are in truth – not a copy or an imitation of someone else, but rather, your own original self.

When you know who you are, you experience yourself as unique, as one-of-a-kind.  You have a special place and a special purpose in being here.  No one can take your place in life or in the universe.  When you know who you really are, you become free because you realize you can be in charge of your life.  You learn to use the natural power within you to realize your true desires, to set meaningful goals for yourself, and to fulfill them successfully.”

Wild turkey antics

June 18, 2013

Where Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim lives, out in the wild, I often have the most amazing encounters with animals of all sorts.  One day, not too long ago, I heard a big commotion outside, dogs barking, turkeys screeching (yes, they can screech), wings flapping.  Expecting the worst, I looked outside – and this is what I saw:

Lets look a little closer:

Thea, is that you??

Normally a brave JungSuwon-imal, she was scared.  She knows she simply is no match for 2 energetic German Shepherds!

She just wouldn’t come down!

Here is what this whole scene looked like from the inside:

Thea!  Don’t you remember what Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim has to say in such a situation, aside from admonishing you to take courage?

“Clinging to a good picture you have created possibly keeps you from expanding into an even greater good.  Clinging to a disagreeable picture keeps you there!  So, don’t hold onto either as though it’s the final story. ” (The Silent Master, page 100)

And as though she understood every word I said, soon enough she was her brave self, asserting herself in Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim’s garden.

Meet Sunshine!

March 28, 2013

Sunshine the skunk

I know what you must be thinking.  “This is so far-fetched.  And what does a skunk have to do with Martial Arts anyhow?”  Pew!  Gross!

I hear you.  But let’s think about this for a moment.

Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim not only emphasizes that God created all living beings, including skunks, and she often asks in class: What is Jung Suwon training about?  What are Martial Arts all about?  It’s a way of life!  And it’s a lot about defending yourself.

And what is the best Self defense?

Avoiding a conflict!

Now, what better way to avoid a conflict that using your secret weapon – your smell?

Sunshine-3

Most predators to skunks only need to see their tail raised, and the fight is over.  Seldom do animals want to get near skunks.  (Yes there are exceptions, but they are rare.)

So, while Sunshine has plenty of skill and ability to fight – she has long, sharp razor claws and equally powerful teeth.  She can hold her own in a fight, she typically doesn’t seek out fights.

Who bother?  She doesn’t have to!

Sunshine-2

I wonder if Sunshine knows Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim’s words,  “The power is in you, it is your personal choice what you do in your life!”  Surely though, she is living those words!

HE CAN DO, SHE CAN DO, WHY NOT ME!

Pictures from a Jung Suwon-imal Christmas celebration

Look at them!  All dressed up and ready for the big day!

Chung Song and Sarang, Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim’s K-9 crew, were proudly posing for Christmas!  Because even though she was in Korea at the time, giving lectures, motivating people, having important business meetings, discussing all sorts of topics with all sorts of important people, everyone at home still got in the Christmas spirit!  Christmas is in your heart, and energy doesn’t have any distance, so whether near or far, in the energy world we are always together.

And those two faithful, beautiful Jung Suwon-imals would like you to remember this (a quote from Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim’s book “The Silent Master”)

“True happiness is feeling your own spiritual qualities, not limited, negative thoughts and feelings. True happiness is spiritual because it is never dependent on just material things or material success.  There is great freedom when you know this because you can never lose your joy, never lose your power, never lose your happiness, no matter what your material circumstances are.”

My idea of happiness: Have ball – will play!

2012-11-24 GM Salton cone on head

I have a ball and I will play too!

2012-11-24 21.51.29

I’ll find a way to get that ball!!!

And after so much play – it’s time to rest up!  As Jung Suwon warriors, human or K-9, we need to be at our best, so we can continue to train, and learn, and perform!

2012-12-25 10.56.53

Goal accomplished – got the ball! And now on to resting!

HE CAN DO, SHE CAN DO, WHY NOT ME!
